The Uber Ride

In June of 2018 I took the most important uber ride of my life. It's funny what life brings you, It's good to stay open to new challenges. Dont close the mind and get stuck in your current path. Seize those opportunities, you have no idea where they will lead you.

I had purchased tickets to a concert at the Greek theatre in Berkeley. Tegan and I, along with two friends were planning a quick little get away. Turns out I bought tickets to the Greek in L.A. who would have known two Greeks in the same state! Well, things happen for a reason, I truly believe that.

Russ , our uber driver picks us up and off we go. I start up a conversation (yes im one of those passengers, I want to know everything about the driver) and come to find out, not only is he an uber driver, but also a health coach. I pick his brain, searching for every detail I can get in this short 30 minute drive. As his story goes on, Tegan is nodding her head yes, you can do this too! I was so intrigued with the possibility of helping others, just didnt see where I could make the time.

We land and head off to the hotel, it was a perfect day. Sun was shining, pool time was in order. It was nice and quiet, had a couple of cocktails, and we were on our way up to get ready for the evening. As we exit the elevator the hotel manager, a guy about my size but carrying a few extra pounds, is approaching us. He politely stops us and begins to ask what I do to keep in shape. He wants to lose a few pounds and doesnt know where to begin. He was not big on exercise, but he knew it was time for a change. Tegan again, says see, another sign! You need to coach. He promised to be my first client If I ever started coaching. I kept a note that he placed on our door on the day of checkout.

Well, we returned home and I couldnt stop thinking about coaching. I searched the internet for any and all information, I became convinced I could make time for this. I called russ and said I was ready to coach! The next few days and weeks were spent reading and watching any videos I could find on health coaching. I was fortunate enough because the concepts and habits were familiar to me. I had been living a variation of this life. this was just to simple to pass up. So bam, im a coach. I brought my plan to two different people that I have known for years. I was so insensitive, arrogant, ignorant and outright stupid with how I approached them. "hey, I have a plan that will help you lose weight, when do you wanna start?" needless to say they told me F--k off, no , not really but it was not well received.

I continued to read and realized how many people acutally suffer from poor habits. Unhealthy and obesity run hand and hand! It was like finding a religion for the first time, I couldnt help but tell people what I had learned. My close friend, the very one that went to the concert with us was my first client! Next came my sister! Coaching has become the most rewarding job/task that I have ever had. Running three businesses definitely has its rewards but seeing peoples lives change for the better is unreal. Some are brought to tears with what they have accomplished, its truly amazing. I have grown as a person, father, husband, son, brother, …… this truly has altered my path in life. I owe it all to a "random uber ride" or was it random after all?
